Posted on September 6, 2011

The primary tool for roughly working wood was the axe. Sawing, while resulting in a smoother cut, was very hard work and time consuming with the kind of saws that were available. Splitting a log along its grain could result, depending on the sort of wood and its condition, in planks or beams that could easily be planed with adzes.
