Mertseger

Posted on August 6, 2011

God of the Valley of the Kings, have the appearance of a woman with the head of cobra, or a scorpion with a woman’s head.

Mertseger was the protector and guardian of the Valley of the Kings, where she lived on a nearby mountain. Her wrath would descend on anyone who disturbed the tombs there, usually by sending poisonous animals against the transgressor. She also protected the valley against unscrupulous workers who might try to steal treasure, or carve out a secret entrance. Yet for all her ferocity, she was merciful. Should a person repent of his crimes against the valley or the tombs, she would heal the wounds he had suffered. Worshipped by the the workers of Deir el-Medina, the people who built many of the tombs in the Valley of the Kings.
